My record keeping is not perfect, so let me know if I've made a mistake. I do requests. If you have a Loop ancestor(s) for whom you'd like to see me publish a group sheet, just let me know. There are so many Loop ancestors out there, I just pick ones to work on either because I've just acquired some information on them or because some question about them has intrigued me. I will, however, limit this offer to ancestors born before 1850, meaning the parent's birthday, not the children's. And either the husband or the wife should be a Loop. If I can find enough information to do a group sheet, I'll do it. So let me know if you have any requests. Subscription rates are $15 for one year, four issues July, October, January and April. The next volume will be Numbers 17 through 20. If you are retired on a fixed income and would find the $15 to be a hardship, you may subscribe for $5, as in the past. (c) Victor L. Bennison, 1988 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Immigrants - The Family of Anthony Lupp of Pennsylvania Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1988] The ship Polly arrived in Philadelphia about 18 OCT 1766 with an Anthony Lupp listed among the passengers. We can't yet prove that this Anthony is the same as the Anthony of Adams County, Pennsylvania, but we think it is highly probable. Anthony Lupp of Adams County, Pennsylvania, died near 6 MAR 1805, the date of the administrative bond for his estate. In that bond, Jacob Lupp is listed as executor. Jacob is probably Anthony's oldest surviving son. Robert Lupp, in his "The Lupp Family" describes a small piece of paper accompanying the administrative bond, with the outside title "Widow Declines". On the inside all he could decipher of the handwritten German script was the name Anna Maria Lupp. I interpret this to mean that Anthony Lupp died intestate and that his widow, Anna Maria, did not want to be the executor, declining in favor of her son Jacob. In the 1790 Federal Census of York County an Anthony Loop is listed as head of a household containing two males over sixteen and two females. This is for part of York County that later became part of Adams county. This is probably Anthony Sr. and Anthony Jr. living in the same house. But where is Jacob? In neighboring Dauphin County that same year we find Ludwig Loop (listed as Parson Loop) and a number of Loops that are not his sons, namely Bernard, Jacob, Christopher, Daniel, and George. Perhaps some of these are sons of Anthony. In the 1800 census of Adams County there are two Anthony Lupp households and a Jacob Lupp household. An Anthony Lupp is listed in Franklin Township as between 26 and 45 with a female (his wife?) listed as over 45. If this age for the older Anthony is correct, then he is not the Anthony who arrived in Philadelphia in 1766, but could be his son. The inventory of Anthony Loop contains the following items: [to be provided, when it can be obtained from Adams County]. Anthony Lupp Sr.'s oldest son, or at least his oldest son surviving beyond 1805, was Jacob Lupp. We know from the christening record for one of Anthony Lupp Jr.'s children that Jacob Lupp's wife's name was Anna Maria. If they are the same as the Jacob Loop and Mariah who are found in the 1850 census of Wayne County, Ohio, then he was born in Pennsylvania about 1771 and she was born in Pennsylvania about 1772. Jacob Loop appears in the tax records for Menallen Township in Adams County for the years 1799, 1800, 1802, and 1806, some of the other years' records being missing. He appears in the 1800 census of Menallen Township as a male aged 26 to 45 with a wife aged 26 to 45 and two girls under ten. Jacob Loop shows up in Wayne County Ohio in the 1820 census. Living near Jacob Loop in the 1850 census of Wayne County, Ohio, is Jacob Loop, Jr., born in Pennsylvania about 1806, his wife Nancy born the same year also in Pennsylvania, and seven of their children all born in Ohio, the oldest being 20. Another son of Anthony Lupp, Sr., was Anthony Lupp, Jr, born before 1775. His wife's name was Esther, and it is likely that her maiden name was Esther Keckler. But I need to explain why I believe that. Of the nine children of Anthony and Esther for whom we have baptismal records, only three of them are given names belonging to one of their sponsors. Their first child Elizabeth, born 1794, has only one sponsor, Elizabeth Keckler. Their second child Joh. Peter, born 1795, has as sponsors Peter Keckler and his wife Maria. Their sixth child Maria, born 1803, has as sponsors Jacob Lupp and his wife Anna Maria. I believe it is almost certain that Elizabeth Keckler and Peter Keckler are members of Esther Lupp's immediate family. Because Elizabeth appears by herself, and all other sponsors appear with spouses, I assume that Elizabeth Keckler is either an unmarried sister, or widowed mother of Elizabeth Lupp. Anthony Lupp was a carpenter by trade, and apparently never owned any land. He lived in Menallen Township, probably from as early as 1790, until 1818 when he moved to Tyrone Township. He paid taxes in the respective townships from 1803 to 1819 on two cows and his carpenters tools. Nine of his children, all that we have found, were christened in the Arendtsville Lutheran and Reformed Union Church from 1794 to 1816. Anthony Lupp died before 12 JUN 1824, the date of the Administrative Bond for his estate. The inventory of his estate, dated in Adams County 12 JUL 1824, as transcribed by Robert Lupp and with my tentative translations, lists: 1 teen Plot Stoff an pipe [tin pot stove and pipe] $2.50 1 Bad & Badstad [bed and bedstead] 8.00 1 Chart [cart or chest?] 1.00 4 Chares [chairs] 1.00 1 Box 1 Banch [box and bench] .25 1 Bade and Badstave [bed and bedstead] 5.00 1 (item crossed out) 2 Paots 1 Cront tafe [pots and ?] 1.50 1 tavel [table?] 2.00 Anthony's wife Esther Lupp died 13 JUN 1849 aged about 80. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++VITAL DATA +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. 1810 Federal Census of Franklin County PA, Hamilton Twp: Christuna Loope 00100 00011 i.e. 1 male 16 to 25 [Christian Jr. born 1788] 1 female 26 to 44 [Christina Jr. born 1784] 1 female over 44 [Christina] 1820 Federal Census of Franklin County PA, Hamilton Twp: Christianus Loop 000010 00011 i.e. 1 male 26 to 44 [Christian Jr. born 1788] 1 female 26 to 44 [Christina Jr. born 1784] 1 female over 44 [Christina] [see note 1, below.] 2. Joanne Ellis also submits this entry from the DAR Patriot Index: Vol 1, p 176: John Darling b 1727, d 1820 m Mary Loop Pvt MA I haven't a clue as to who this Mary Loop is. I did a little more research on this John Darling. According to the DAR records and the Massachusetts Revolutionary war records, this John Darling was from Winchendon, MA, and served a few days early in the war in 1775 at Cambridge and then later that year served with Benedict Arnold in his March through Maine to try to take Quebec. Arnold was unsuccessful and John Darling was taken prisoner. I suspect, however, that this is a red herring anyway. I fully believe that a John Darling married a Mary Loop, though I don't know where she came from. But I smell something suspicious about the connection between the John Darling who married Mary Loop and the soldier John Darling. He would have been pretty old (almost 50) to go off as a private on as grueling an expedition as the one to Quebec. And how did Mary Loop get to Winchendon? None of the known Loop families were within 100 miles of there and there was no natural transportation route between there and where the Loop's were. And if he went west after the war and met her, he would have been somewhat old to be starting a family. It's all possible, of course, but I've found the DAR lineages to be in error more often than not. According to the DAR lineage, by the way, John Darling and Mary Loop had a daughter Hannah who married an Ebenezer Brown. 4. Index of Civil War Pension applications at National Archives, Wash. QUERIES ????????????????????????????????? Please send responses to queries to the Loop Scoop. I will relay them to the person asking the question. 1. Henry H. Loop was born in New York between 1827 and 1836. He does not show up in Chautauqua County until the 1855 census of that county. There he is listed as the adopted son of Nicolas Thum and his county of birth is listed as unknown. He married Luana Marsh and lived in Chautauqua County until his death in 1911. On his death certificate his father is listed as John Loop. No mother is listed. Questions: Where was he born? Who were his parents? - Vick Bennison 2. Family info indicates father of Peter H. Loop b. 1766/7 d. 1855 Sandusky Co., OH, was Peter Loop Sr. b. 1743 Schoharie, NY, d. 1843 Woodstock, IL. Other info places Peter H. as the son of Ensign Henry Loop. Has anyone found records of a Schoharie NY Peter Loop, of a Peter Loop dying or buried at Woodstock (McHenry County) IL, or a marriage record of Ensign Henry's son Peter? My Peter Loop married Rebecca Gilbert, supposedly in 1790 at Schoharie, NY, and his tombstone has Peter Loop, JR. 1766 - 1855. - Joanne Ellis 3. I am seeking the parents of Jane Loop who married Jonathan Andrus (Andrews) of New York. Their child, Polly Andrews, born 3 APR 1791, died 17 DEC 1872 at Windsor, NY, she having married Ezra Barton on 28 NOV 1808 in Broome County, NY. Is there proof that she is the daughter of Peter Loop and Couysa Springer? - Dee Merritt 4. Who were the parents of Almond Loop, where and when were they born? Did he have any brothers and sisters? Almond was born 27 FEB 1828, in New York State, where? He was married in Bradford, Penn., to Mary Melissa Moore, 22 JAN 1850. They lived in Penn., until 1865 when they moved to Manchester, Iowa. He died 27 JUN 1912. I would like to know the parents of Mary Moore, where and when they were born. Mary was born in Jamestown, New York, 6 JAN 1836 and died 23 OCT 1901 in Iowa. - Vola Carter 5. Need maiden name, date/place of birth, date/place of death of Naomi (Barlow) Loop, wife of John L. Loop. Need date/place of birth, date/place of death of Ezra Loop, son of John L. and Naomi Loop. Ezra must have died between 1870 and 1880, probably in Richardson County, Nebraska. - Virginia L. Bachofer 6. [From the New York Biographical and Genealogical Record:] LOUP - WILSON. Parents and family of Mary Lane Loup, born about 1826, who married Robert B. Wilson of Bradford, [McKean County], Pennsylvania, about 1847, moved to Illinois 1858-1860, thence to Jessup, Iowa. - Mrs. R. J. Malone +++++++++++++++++++++++ NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS +++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. The two census records from Franklin County, PA, in the vital data section have alterred my views on the family of Ludwig's son Christian. Franklin County is right next door to Cumberland County where we find Christian's widow Christina and children Christian Jr. and Christina Jr. in 1790. It appears that Christina kept her family in Pennsylvania until at least 1820. The other female in the records might not be Christina Jr., but rather a wife of Christian Jr., though no children have shown up by 1820 when he would be 32, which makes me think it is his sister. If Christian Jr. stayed in Pennsylvania to 1820, then he is not the Christian in Virginia. That makes the Christian in Virgina Philip's son. But why so many sources list the Christian in Virginia as Christian, Jr., is then a real puzzle to me. 2. Note the Mexican war record in the Vital Data section above for one Edgar S. Loop. His record is almost identical to that for Murray Loop. He mustered in on the same day in the same unit, and was mustered out on the same day. And he served in the same company as Murray for the whole time. But who is this Edgar S. Loop? I believe he is either a son of Murray's or a son of Murray's brother Henry. Henry was married to Minerva Calkins in 1823 and we have no children for him from 1826 to 1833. Several secondary sources for Murray claim to list all his children and don't list Edgar. So I think the most likely candidate is Henry as the father of Edgar. 3. Marilyn Loop: I think I'm making some progress on your Christian Loop line. In the 1790 census of Northumberland County, PA is a Christian Loop with one male over 16, two males under 16 and three females. Now, I've also found the following births: John Roush, son of John Jacob Roush/Elizabeth (or Barbara?) Wittermyer, 1774, Freeburg, Northumberland, PA John Roush, son of John George Roush/Christina Mohr 1785, Freeburg, Northumberland, PA Martin Roush, son of John George Roush/Christina Mohr 1787, Freeburg, Northumberland, PA We also have the following tax record: 1785 Northumberland County, Augusta Twp., State Tax: Christian Lupp 0 acres, 0 horses, 0 cattle, 0 sheep Tax 1.1 So there we have a John Roush born in 1774 in the same county where there was a Christian Loop in 1785 and 1790. Then we move to Westmoreland County, PA, where we find a John Loop, and a Jacob Loop in Mount Pleasant township in 1790, and also find there: Elizabeth Rauch daugther of John Rauch/Elizabeth, b. 17 AUG 1800 Mount Pleasant twp., Westmoreland, PA We know that Christian Loop's "son" John Rouse was born about 1775. So John Rouse could easily be the one born in Northumberland County in 1774. And his wife is named Elizabeth, an important fact, since we know the John Roush of Delaware County, Ohio, "son" of Christian Loop, had a wife named Elizabeth. If Mrs. Corbin's hypothesis is correct, and Christian Loop married John Rouse's mother, then Christian Loop's wife's name was Elizabeth [or Barbara, the IGI shows both] Wittermyer. The new information you gave me that Christian's "daughter" Grace Felkey is listed in a deed as Grace Rouse Felkey, I think pretty well seals it in my view. She was apparently born before George in 1790, because of the order in which Christian listed his children in his will, and back then middle names were not very much in vogue, so Rouse is probably her maiden name. By the way, there is a will for John Rouse (or one of the spellings) in Delaware County. I saw a reference to it in an index or something. I haven't tried to obtain it yet. That's something you might want to do. I think it might pay to do a little research on the Wittermyer name also. 3. Ross Roby points out that I was probably mistaking Christian Loop for his brother Peter Loop, Jr., when I said that Christian was a lawyer. I stand corrected. I have no evidence to indicate that Christian was a lawyer like his brother. 4. Edwin Grossnickle, I have a question for you. Where did you get the birth and death dates (1740-1822) for Peter Loop, father of Peter Loop, Jr? The parentage of Peter Loop, Jr., or Peter H. Loop, or whoever he was who married Rebecca Gilbert, has given us no end of troubles. Any information you have on that line would be of great interest. 5. In the vital data section I have included index card entries for Civil War pension applications. I looked through some of these records while I was at the National Archives, but did not have time to go through all the applications. If you see a Loop that you think you are related to, you can contact the nearest Archives branch and obtain a form for ordering the pension records. I think it costs $5. If you do obtain any of the records, please make copies and send them to me. The first half of the list appeared in the issue #16 of the Scoop. 6. Jim Fry send some very interesting information about his ancestors William Fry and Eunice Ann (Loop) Fry, who were early Mormons. I'm going to save that to publish in the next issue of the Scoop. 7. I recently came across a reference which explained who the John Loop was who appeared in the 1810 census of the town of German in Chenango County, NY. It is in the newspaper article in the family group sheet for John Loop son of Ensign Henry (here published) concerning the Loop family reunion of 1931. This John lived in German, Chenango County for several years around 1810, and he is the one censused. So I am removing the John from Martin Loop's group sheet for lack of any evidence that Martin had a son named John. I believe Omer Loop included a John in Martin's family solely on the basis of this census record. 8. After some further research, I am sad to report that the two sons of schoolmaster Johann Henrich Lupp, brothers of Ludwig Lupp, about whom I had speculated that they also came to America, did not. The son Anthony Lupp, it is now certain, died young. The son Henrich was not Henrich at all, I misread the baptismal record, it was Friedrich Lupp, and as his wife died in Germany in 1791, I doubt that he is the Friedrich in the 1790 census in western Pennsylvania. It appears that only one son of Johann Henrich Lupp came to America. And we still don't know who the Henrich and Anthony are who arrived in Philadelphia in 1754 and 1766 respectively.
